Tues. 31st. Jan.
Rented the car as planned. Picked it up a 10am and took off for Piazza Armerina. A 2 hour drive through beautiful rolling countryside and mountains. Etna was in view for most of the journey, well some of it, the bit that wasn't covered in cloud!! We arrived at the Villa Romana at around 12.30 and were worried that it would be closed for the afternoon. It wasn't and we paid our €5 each to enter. It is a large site which covers about 3,500 square metres. Only a small portion of it is open to the public, presumably the rest is still being excavated. The mosaics are astonishing. About 1700 years old and well preserved by mud after a flood in about 1200. It took us around an hour to thoroughly enjoy and examine the mosaics, it was disappointing that more wasn't available to view. After a good lunch in a trattoria in the town we had a quick look around and headed for home. The cathedral was closed, as was most of the town, hardly a soul to be seen. It rained for most of the afternoon and it was a relief to get back to GN. Downloaded some great pics and put them on Facebook, the video of the bikini girls was the highlight. Weather permitting, Etna tomorrow. Time for a drink. It's still raining. Happy days!!

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Mon. 30th. Jan.
What a day!! It has not stopped raining from dawn to now, 10.15pm. Our host, the owner of the site, Sylvino, took me in his car, first to the Fiat agent in GN, who couldn't help, and then to the Peugeot agent just outside Catania who ordered a pipe from Milan. It will not arrive before Thursday and an appointment has been made to fit it on Friday, fingers crossed. We will be kicking our heels here until then. The weather is appalling, heavy rain and high winds, with more of the same forecast for tomorrow. If it improves we plan to rent a car, see the sites we've planned before Friday by car and get back to the mainland at the weekend. Our love affair with Sicily is at an end. We should be grateful though that the repair to the roof which Ernie, our Austrian friend undertook has held well and for that we owe him big time. We have spent the day in the van and read loads, thank you Kindle. Time for another whisky before bedtime. Getting stir crazy!!

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Sun.29th. Jan.
Another day kicking our heels. Walked down to the sea front, phoned Arnie. Considered taking bus to Taormina but weather damp. Spent an hour or so before lunch Skyping Anthony and Julie and grandchildren. What would we do without Skype, E-mail, Facebook, digital camera and Kindles?? Spent afternoon reading and walked into G N for gelato. Time for dinner. Bit of TV and then to bed. Sorry if we're boring you. Hope to get the van fixed tomorrow and get on the move. Maybe just one whisky before bed.

Sat. 28th. Jan.
We're beginning to wonder if we will ever get up Etna. Today we set out to see the mountain close up and half way there the exhaust pipe / silencer broke. Very noisy!! We nursed the van back to Giardini N and are waiting for Monday so we can find someone to fix it. We seem to be encountering a few minor setbacks at the moment but mustn't grumble. We have plenty of food and are warm and comfortable, Maria and Geert are in Germany on their way home and have 10" of snow and 0 degree temperatures. I know where I'd rather be!! Looking on the bright side, once we've got this fixed we can be on our way again and every day seems to be getting a little warmer. We'll soon be sunbathing again. Its raining at the moment!! Happy days.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Fri. 27th. Jan.
Had a good night by the beach, very quiet, just the sound of the surf. (And my coughing apparently.) After breakfast headed back to Milazzo to visit the castle. On the way we spotted a shopping centre and went off in search of a new camera to replace the one we lost. Bought another Olympus, paid too much but we can start taking pics again. On to Milazzo and parked in a dodgy spot, Italian style and took off up the steps to the old town. A long slog later we arrived at the castle and found it to be closed, still undergoing renovations after 2 years. Looked around the duomo and learned a little about the history of the castle. Walked back to the van and were relieved to find no parking ticket. It's good to know we can get away with outrageous parking too!! Made an executive decision to head for Giardini Naxus for the night and a trip to Etna tomorrow. Stromboli had it's chance and blew it!! We're going for the big one!! Hope the weather is kind to us for our trip tomorrow. Took a long walk tonight in G N and have to say that it is probably the best part of the island.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Thurs. 26th. Jan.
Bit the bullet today and left Rais Gerbi after 16 nights. It was too comfortable and as we were both feeling unwell, too easy to stay and veg. We had a tank full of diesel but were running short of gas, which can be difficult to get in Sicily. Succeeded in obtaining that and struck out for Milazzo in the north east corner of the island. We parked on a deserted car park, on the beach to the east of the town and overlooking two islands, one of which which we hoped might be the active Stromboli. We waited for darkness and the anticipated vulcanic firework display. Not a spark!! Obviously the wrong islands. Must call at the tourist office and seek advice. Plan early start Friday, visit the castle, and move on.

Wed. 25th. Jan.
Today we got diesel in the village. The weather was miserable, cold and damp and we both still have colds. Stayed put, in the warm, read and relaxed. Some adventure!! Gunther, our friendly German next door neighbour went to the village for lunch and brought us back a slice each of spicy pepperoni and mushroom pizza. You meet good people travelling like this!! Nothing further to report, must move on on Thursday.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Tue.24th. Jan.
Today Jan decided to get her ends trimmed. We decided that in light of the strikes and closed petrol stations we'd stay here another day. After 2 hours I went off in search of Jan and the little treasure had had her ends trimmed, the rest cut, re-styled, coloured and set. I arrived just in time to see the bill paid!! She looks like a million dollars and we have no camera to record the moment. How aggravating. When we arrived here I went down a steep ramp and for the last 2 weeks have worried that I may have done some damage. Today we took the van to Tusa, a small town about 15Ks away for some serious shopping. No problems, happy to report. We collected a few bits for our neighbours, Ernie and Estelle. They invited us in for drinks and snacks and we spent a pleasant hour or so chatting. I feel so inadequate sometimes that we speak no German and they communicate so well in English. Nice people, Estelle is Belgian and Ernie is Austrian. It's a real bonus on our travels that we are privileged to meet nice people. Must move on tomorrow.!!

Nothing to report really. Still got rotten cough, Jan still has cold. Walked to shops today and after lunch stayed in van and read. Declined an invitation to drinks with Ernie and Estelle because we really didn't feel like socialising. Must shake ourselves up tomorrow.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Sun. 22nd. Jan.
It's official, our camera is definitely gone. I've finally had to admit that it is nowhere to be found in the van or on the campsite, so no more pictures until we can buy another. Not that we've had much to photograph in the last few days, a few germs floating around the place. Getting fed up with this cold, so is Jan. We need to move on, the adventure has stalled. Today we shopped and skyped and read our books, the sun came out for a couple of hours which was pleasant. Had pork chops for dinner and watched some more odd Welsh undertaker humour. Must move on Tuesday.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Sat. 21st. Jan.
Back to posting the day after. Sunday morning, weather fine, sun shining. Saturday was spent mainly coughing and blowing nose. Had a break to walk to the village to shop then resumed morning activities after lunch. Did the washing, changed the beds and collapsed exhausted, after dinner to watch a strange DVD which Ian had brought us about Welsh undertakers. Very odd - kept Jan amused though, I slept through most of it. No whisky left, may have to shop Sunday for medicinal reasons. Cough no better.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Fri. 20th. Jan.
Hooray. This post is going out on on the correct day. First time for a long time. We have had a quiet day, a lay in this morning and a stroll to the village for a little shopping. It's the first time we've been totally on our own for a few weeks and we've been indulging ourselves in silence, reading and doing internet stuff. The day threatened to be warm, then clouded over, a bit like an English summer day. I have a nasty cough and Janet has a cold. We will pamper ourselves here until Tuesday probably and if the weather is still like this we may head for the mainland. Geert and Maria are in the south east corner and enjoying 18 degrees. We're very envious. It hasn't actually rained today so the repair to the roof has not been put to the test. Decided against watering can, just too lazy!! Fingers crossed then. Liver and bacon tonight for dinner. We've started watching Twin Peaks on DVD but I'm not sure we'll see it through. We keep falling asleep.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Thurs. 19th. Jan.
Well, we made it to the airport with a minimum of fuss. Filled up with diesel at the only petrol station we saw open all day!! The traffic was extremely light, I think because everyone took the day off work. We were lucky! Checked the Woodwards' baggage and had coffee, agreed to do it again next year in Portugal, but only if the weather is warmer, said our goodbyes and were back in Cefalu by just after midday, having done shopping at Conad's. The weather suddenly brightened up and we sat in our chairs and enjoyed warm sunshine whilst eating lunch. Our new friends from Austria, Ernie and Estelle offered to help with the roof repair and Ernie did the job while I watched and learned. We haven't put it to the test yet and it didn't rain last night. I think I might have to give it the watering can test today!! Both Jan and I have got bad colds, my first since leaving England, I think Ian infected me, (he is never without a cold.) After a hectic 10 days I think we may stay in the warm on Friday, have a lazy day. Ian left a little whisky and some tea bags. No prizes for guessing which I will be sampling tonight.

Wed. 17th. Jan.
OK let's try again. Just lost 20 lines of text, just so aggravating. Went to Palermo on the train today, Ian and Michelle's last day. This was our third visit and the first time we'd ventured to the seafront and harbour. Very pretty, stunning views across the harbour to the mountains in the east. Jan bought 2 pairs of shoes in a sale and was very pleased with herself. We saw a piazza with some unusual trees, fica magnolia, like something out of a science fiction film. I like Palermo, something interesting around every corner. I'd put my camera out for the trip and discovered I didn't have it with me. Assumed that I'd left it back at the van but can't find it anywhere. Very puzzling, good job I've downloaded all the pics. Turned the van upside down but convinced it will turn up. The weather was fine today and I'm hoping it holds so that I can deal with the leak problem on Thursday. Had dinner in the village tonight, Gastropoli!! Pleasant surprise, you select your meal from food displayed in the cold cabinet and they take it off and prepare it. We all had large dish of mussells to start. Plenty of beer and wine. Great fun, a good way to spend the last evening of Ian's holiday. Although the weather has been disappointing and we've done less than we'd hoped it's been a pleasure having them around. We'll miss them. Heard tonight that there are strikes all over the island and petrol stations are all closed. Could be a problem as we have only a quarter tank of diesel in the car and need to get to the airport and back. Cross that bridge when we come to it I suppose.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Tues. 17th. Jan.
Another crappy night. Rain got under the tarpaulin and leaked into van again. I spent the morning removing wet upholstery and piece of carpet under seat. I've taped up the leaks and have my fingers crossed that we'll have a couple of rain free days for the whole thing to dry out. We went for a drive in the afternoon and enjoyed the lovely countryside. (Looks much better in the sunshine.) Had another good evening of food, drink, conversation and Monopoly in the van. Plan another trip to Palermo tomorrow, by train. Should be fun.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Mon.16th.Jan.
Rained last night. Water got in where I had previously made repair. Spent the morning examining the problem and figuring out what to do. Bought large tarpaulin, and with the help of our Austrian neighbour, battened down the hatches. Spent rest of the day worrying and waiting for the rain. Clearly we are going to have to sort this out, problem is, while the weather is so wet there's no point in applying mastic. Maybe we'll get a few dry days soon. Ian and Michelle treated us to dinner in a local trattoria, food OK, company great. A good end to a pretty crappy day.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Sun.15th.Jan.
Well, today was going to be the day. We set off for Etna bright and early, well, ten past nine. It was raining. The omens weren't good. Still, we were optimistic, Ian was navigating, Kevin was driving, all went well until we left the motorway. Took the wrong road up into the mountains, 30 Ks on turned around and came back. Found the right road, headed back into the mountains, other mountains. Saw some wonderful scenery as we climbed higher and higher, the views were spectacular. Drove through a small town called San Fratello, onwards and upwards, saw the first snow at the side of the road. A few Ks further - more snow at side of the road, piled 3 feet high. It wasn't long before we found snow and slush in the roadway and conditions were looking bleak, road down to 6-7 feet wide, we encountered stuff coming the other way, problems. As things got worse we made the decision to turn around and head for home. So there we are, no Etna for us. Who'd have thought we'd be snowed off? Still, we had an adventure, got panine and cakes for lunch, ate them in the car park of the cemetry in San Fratello, (Ian was driving) great views!! Home for siesta. Evening taken up with dinner and Monopoly Deal, Jan won and so did Michelle. Not much of a day for the men then!! Wine and whisky were taken. I will visit Etna before we leave the island.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Sat.14th.Jan.
Today we spent the morning in Cefalu, mainly around the market, on the seafront. Jan picked up a few bits and we bought some fish for dinner with a king prawn starter. Coffee and cake in a cafe around 11am., first of the day, not a minute too soon!! I was close to expiring through caffeine defficiency. Cold day again, we're beginning to think we should have stayed on the mainland, the weather seems to be better there. Siesta in the afternoon and shopping in Tusa around 5. Stocked up on cheap wine and whisky, we've been drinking €4 wine all week, very extravagant. Dinner of fish done on barbecue, delicious, washed down with fizzy strawberry wine purchased by Ian and Michelle. Strange stuff. Prefer the real thing. Another good evening of pleasant company, much wine and odd conversation. Etna tomorrow, weather permitting.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
The sun shone today, all day. I came out of the van around 10 and found Ian and Michelle comfortably settled in our loungers soaking up rays. That was it. Couldn't move them!! We spent the day moving the chairs around following the sun. It was warm enough to slightly change colour but by 1pm the strength was going out of it. Still, it was very pleasant and relaxing, no driving, just what we all needed. By 3pm, after a good lunch it was time for siesta. Dinner this evening was prepared by Ian in their place, pasta with bacon and chicken and salad. Very good. We played Monopoly Deal after dinner - odd game, but it entertained us for an hour. Cefalu market tomorrow.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Thurs. 12th. Jan.
I'm getting worse at posting my blog on the right day. We went to Monreale today and planned to visit the cathedral, famous for it's mosaics. Arrived at 12, cathedral closed until 3.30pm. Ridiculous!! We had coffee, wandered around for an hour and left disappointed. We headed for Palermo and visited the Cappucin Cattacombs. Ian was determined to see them. Hundreds of corpses in various stages of disintegration, hanging from nails in the wall. Fascinating, why would people want to dispose of the dead in such a way, this was started by friars at the end of the 16th. century. Very odd!! Still Ian really enjoyed his visit. It was fun driving around Palermo and Monreale. You can tell people about the dreadful driving habits and lack of courtesy shown by Italian drivers but nothing prepares them for the reality of coming face to face with it. Ian drove back to the site from Palermo, nice to sit in the back and take in the views. Spent another pleasant evening eating dinner and talking. Before we knew it the evening and the wine and whisky were finished. Another late night. Must shop tomorrow for more essential supplies.

Kevnjans big adventure.
Wed. 11th.Jan.
Settling in day. It poured with rain again last night, big thunderstorm, high winds, van let in water where I repaired it last week. Good job Kev!! Before anything else I had to make that good. The rain here is like nothing we see in England, like someone turns a tap on. Anyway the job's done, fingers crossed. The sun shone for a while and it was quite warm, sat out and had coffee, Ian and Michelle dressed in hats gloves and overcoats!! In the afternoon we took a walk around the local village, Caldura, decided against a long excursion in the car after much travelling yesterday. We discovered a restaurant and a couple of bars so all the essentials are taken care of. By 2.30pm the weather was turning colder again and having laid in some necessary supplies from the local grocer, wine, whisky and Amaretto we settled down for a siesta. In the evening we drove to Cefalu, had a good walk around and found a pleasant trattoria where we enjoyed some delicious Italian fare. Back to the van for nightcaps and pictures of the day's activities. Despite the late night found time to read a few pages on my new toy, a Kindle. Wonderful invention.

Kevnjans big adventure.
Tues.10th. Jan.
After a wild night at the marina, walked up to town to collect the car. A Ford Fusion diesel which the previous rentors had thoughtfully covered in scratches and dents, saving me the trouble. The upside is that in the unlikely event that Ian or I should have a little touch, it will be impossible for the hire company to spot it. We said goodbye to Geert and Maria, probably for the last time this trip, I think they are heading back to the mainland soon, and headed for the airport to collect Ian and Michelle. Their flight arrived on time and all went smoothly. We are now wet up at Rais Gerbi campsite, about 12 Ks east of Cefalu, a large, pleasant site, overlooking the sea, Ian and Michelle have a static moblile home and seem happy with it. Tomorrow, we start to explore.

Kevnjans big adventure.
Mon.9th. Jan.
Today Jan is feeling a little better. It's just as well as we had to leave Sferrocavallo and head for Cefalu where the Woodwards will be spending the next 9 days. We found the site which is great but found it to be outside a small village and had to drive back to Cefalu for shopping and car hire. We are camped out on a marina tonight so I can pick up the car tomorrow. It's blowing a gale and freezing cold. Freddo as we say in Italian. The fun starts here.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Sun.8th. Jan.
Going through a little rocky patch at the moment. Poor Jan was taken by a severe bout of food poisoning last night, without going into details, she had a rotten time and barely slept. We think she ate a panino which was suspect. Nurse Kevin administered TLC and lost sleep to show solidarity. As we dozed, in the early hours, three loud explosions rocked the night. Someone had torched 3 cars, about 100yards away and peace was shattered. Fire engines attended and dogs barked for miles around. Our plan to head for Cefalu today was put on hold to allow Jan to recover. I learned how to use the washing machine on site and that when putting up a washing line, one should make sure the knots are good. It's now 8.15pm and Jan has only been up for about 20 minutes all day. Hope she feels better tomorrow. Thank heaven for left overs, found some meatballs in the freezer so didn't have to eat my own cooking. (One of us with upset stomach is enough.) Taking the last of the whisky, deserve it. Long day.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Sat.7th. Jan.
A day of disappointments. Woke up excited at the prospect of going to Cefalu and onto Etna. Discovered that Etna had stopped erupting. How dare it?? So we'd missed out on the eruption. Decided that we'd hang around another day and explore Palermo. Took the bus and found ourselves outside the church of Santo Domingo. Went in and took a look, probably would find it's way into my top ten. Had gelatto, very good, and cheap. Tourist office was closed until 3pm. so we wandered around the shops, very up-market, smart town. Had panini for lunch, delicious, and coffee. The opera house and the concert hall are very impressive. When the tourist office re-opened we got a map and a local paper with information about concerts etc. By that time it was time to head back to the site. Maybe we'll have another look before we leave the island. Returned to Sferrocavallo and bought some dulce. Jan tried on several woollen dresses and jumpers but didn't buy. It's been that kind of day. Jan cooked lamb casserole for dinner, lamb dreadful, all bone. Another disappointment. The whisky is as good as it was yesterday, things are looking up. Saturday night TV awful. On the move tomorrow.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Fri.6th. Jan.
Was right about the whisky, should have bought some. Spent a nerve wracking night listening to rain hammering down on my repairs and wind blowing at gusts of heaven knows what. I don't want to complain but the weather here has been rubbish since we arrived! We walked down to the sea front today and saw waves 20 feet high crashing in onto the beach, very dramatic, the wind was blowing a gale and the rain was never far away. Felt sorry for Maria,( she and Geert arrived last night.) trying to get large amounts of washing dry. We had hot dogs for lunch and settled down for a siesta, no point in going out, the rain was raining and the hail was rattling on the roof, still scary. We were invited out to dinner tonight by Geert and Maria and accepted gratefully. We had them up for drinks beforehand and the whole evening was a real pleasure. It was a perfect end to a pretty miserable day, we laughed all the way. We're feeling that we're missing out on the eruption of Mount Etna and I think that tomorrow we'll head to Cefalu, hopefully fix up digs for Ian and Michelle and then head off to see the volcano. Palermo can wait for another day. Might just have one more small whisky before bedtime. Had to have a drink to offer our guests didn't I?

Kevnjans big adventure.
Thur. 5th.Jan.
The repair seems to have held, no sign of water ingress this morning. Covered silicone with tape this morning, belt and braces!! Just have to hope it's good and the weather improves. Managed to get most of the washing dry so packed up and made ready to move on. Headed east along the north coast and through several small towns, Ballestrate, Trapetto and Terrasini. Encountered the usual ration of narrow streets, bad parking and worse drivers, all contributing to several nerve racking moments. It would be much easier to stick to the main roads and motorways but not nearly so much fun and we'd miss so many sights. The scenery up north is rugged and mountainous with panoramic views over the sea. We decided to take a look at a site in Sferracavallo, on the outskirts of Palermo. Camping Degli Uvili is a small site, pretty enough with olive trees and decent pitches, about 700 metres from the sea front. Had a good walk around this afternoon and decided to take the bus into Palermo tomorrow, then we discovered that it's a public holiday, buses won't be so good. We'll see. Didn't buy whisky today although we shopped. Thinking that was a mistake as I sit here with a glass of diet coke.

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Wed.4th.Jan.
Bad news last night after posting blog. Seriously heavy rain exposed leak which resulted in water dripping off light fitting behind drivers seat, obviously didn't repair the right area. Rain stopped, mopped up water and had late night, most of which was spent worrying. This morning stripped out old mastic around joins above off side roof and replaced. Covered whole area just before rain started again. No time to add tape. Fingers crossed. This afternoon had a pleasant surprise as Maria and Geert turned up for a visit and coffee. They brought dulce which is good and bad as we are trying to steer clear of fattening substances and can't resist them!! (Dulce are small sweets which are a cross between biscuits and cakes, often flavoured with almonds. Delicious.) The other problem with the rain is that we are finding it very difficult to dry the washing, of which there is an awful lot. Still we're in Sicily, how long can the rain go on?? Tonight we went out for dinner, didn't manage it Christmas day or New Years Eve and thought we deserved it. (Especially after the bloody day we've had.) Enjoyed it thoroughly, couple of drinks then dinner, Jan had pasta then chicken in Marsala sauce and I had fish. Lovely evening. Came home, watched TV and finished last bottle of Valpolicella. Got onto Motor Home Fun website today looking for advice on how to deal with water ingress problem. General concensus was to patch up and wait until back in England to fix roof. Much as we thought. Worrying though, it's pouring at the moment, so far so good!! May need Scotch tomorrow.

Tues.3rd.Jan.
Rained during the night and to my horror found water had got into the van off side, behind driver's seat. On inspection found sealer between over cab roof and main van was not sound and I removed and replaced it. I hope it's done the trick, when we get a dry day I think I'll renew the whole seam. We drove into Trapani and had a walk around the old town. It's a pretty town with enormous waterfront. We took some pics and put them on Facebook. We decided to cut across country, north to Castellmare del Golfo to a campsite instead of west to San Vito lo Capo as we wanted to begin checking out possible locations for Ian's visit next week. It meant waving goodbye to our friends Geert and Maria for a while but no doubt we'll bump into them again soon. The site we're on tonight is pretty basic, it's called Play Time, the lady in charge is very friendly and there is a washing machine, Jan has her TV and I have my computer so all is well. Fish for dinner, cooked in a bag with herbs. So good I had to have a glass of wine. The washing is on the line and it's just begun to rain. Cest la vie!!

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Mon.2nd.Jan.
Not a bad night if you discount the idiots letting off fireworks for most of it and the other idiots driving around the marina playing loud music. What is it about marinas that provoke people to drive around them? I've asked this before I know. After a leisurely breakfast we walked into town with Geert and Maria, the girls shopped a little while we men showed great patience and talked about men things. After a couple of hours we had coffee and cake and headed back for lunch. This afternoon we drove west hoping to find a suitable spot to camp near Marsala but nothing appealed and we drove on along the coast along Saline di Trapani, a large lagoon where they harvest salt and refine it for the table. Spectacularly beautiful coastline with windmills and pretty houses dotted around. The sea is crystal and multi coloured and the weather was warm and sunny. We travelled together and are now camped on a car park on the sea front, overlooking the bay at Torre di Mezza, a small village. We have been befriended by a stray dog who won't leave us and he has fallen in love with Tessa, Maria's dog. Geert had trouble with his generator today and was unable to fix it, we felt very sorry for him because I think we were going to share his electicity, we felt sorry for us too!! I drank the last of my 2011 Scotch last night so I'm on coke tonight. May do the last bottle of wine tomorrow. Thinking about a few days off the booze. We'll see!!

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Sun. 1st. Jan, 2012,
Woke around 8am having had late night, 1.15am. clear head, feeling great, had just enough to drink last night. The evening was great, I think the highlight was the chocolate mousse - that and winning Yahtzee!! We took things very easy this morning and I even managed to wash some of the muck off the van before leaving. I don't know why I bother, it will be dirty again in a day or two. The day was warm and sunny and we enjoyed a leisurely drive through Campobello and along a delightful stretch of coastal road to Mazara del Vallo. We stopped for lunch at a dramatic headland just outside the village of Granitola, put the table and chairs out and enjoyed the sun. We are now parked on a car park in Mazara in company with Geert and Maria and several other campers. A nice town, full of lunatics letting off bangers. They seem to find it very amusing. We found a gelaterria and felt duty bound to sample the wares, it must be over a week since Jan had a proper ice cream, we were in Siracuse. Very good. No hook up tonight so no TV and no games on the computer. We may go out to dinner, Jan deserves it. (So do I.)

Kevnjan's big adventure.
Sat.31st.Dec.
New years eve. Spent an hour or so searching for a restaurant where we could celebrate new year. All closed. Plan B was to get some lamb and Jan to cook lamb casserole but the butcher had no lamb. Reverted to plan C. Four good pork chops to grill on the barbecue. Bumped into Geert and Maria in the village, had a coffee and agreed that they would do the pudding and pickies and we would do the main. Fabulous clear bright day, warm sunshine, out of the wind. Great weather for walking. The evening came and we spent a very relaxing and agreeable time drinking, eating and chatting. Yahtzee was played, and I won. Great way to end 2011. Couldn't help thinking of friends who died in the last year, Peter Munro, John Sugden and Des from work. All great characters who can't be replaced. The year ended on a great note, retired, travelling as planned and with more of the same to look forward to in 2012, hope the warmer weather arrives soon, the tan's beginning to fade. Happy new year everyone.
